Product FAQ

Q. Why are vinyl windows the best choice?
A. Your choice of framing material goes a long way toward determining the longevity and energy efficiency of the window system. Wood windows possess excellent thermal qualities but are prone to weather deterioration and require painting regularly. Aluminum windows are very durable but offer little insulating value because they conduct energy. Vinyl windows are your best choice because they offer thermal characteristics similar to wood and are extremely durable and provide a finish that is virtually maintenance-free. Also keep in mind that the best performing vinyl window systems have multi-chambered frames with precision welded corners.

Q. What is low emissivity glass?
A. Low emissivity glass is commonly referred to, as Low E. Low E is glass that has been coated with a micro-thin metallic film to improve thermal performance. The coating reduces the transfer of heat through the glass while still allowing light to pass through. In essence, the coating reflects heat back toward its source. Heat from your heating system stays inside the home during cold weather, and in hot weather, heat is reflected back towards the exterior, resulting in greater comfort and lower energy consumption. Low E coatings also reduce harmful ultraviolet rays that cause drapes and upholstery to fade.

Q. What is Argon Gas and why is it used with Low E glass?
A. Argon is a safe odorless, colorless, non-toxic, non-flammable insert that is commonly used in place of air between the glass panes of an insulated Low E glass unit. Argon gas reduces convection activity within the sealed unit. Argon is not an effective solar performer by itself which is why it is only used in conjunction with Low E insulated glass.

Q. What is Tempered glass?
A. Tempered glass is heat strengthened, extremely strong and often used where security is an issue. In addition to it’s strength, when it breaks, it comes apart into little pebble-like pieces without sharp edges. Tempered glass is ideal for applications like doors, patio doors, side lights, and bathroom enclosures for showers and tubs.

Q. What is Laminated glass?
A. Laminated glass is two pieces of glass with a strong plastic layer sandwiched in between. Laminated glass is highly effective in reducing noise and ultraviolet rays that can cause drapes and upholstery to fade. Laminated glass also offers a high level of security.

Q. How do I care for my Centra windows & glass patio doors?
A. Frame cleaning is just as important to the look and performance of your Centra window or patio door as glass cleaning. Wash window and patio door frames with only mild, non-abrasive soap and water. Never use abrasive or acidic cleaners because they might cause permanent damage to the frame finish. Always test cleaners in an inconspicuous area first. Wipe dry when finished. The best practice to clean glass is with a mixture of mild dish soap and water. When finished, rinse complete with clear water and wipe dry with a soft cloth. Never use petroleum-based cleaners, or caustic chemicals, razor blades, putty knifes, abrasive pads or high-pressure water hoses on any part of your window or patio door since they may damage the glass surface or sealed unit. Use only mild soap, water, and a soft brush when cleaning your screens. When finished, rinse completely with clear water and wipe dry.
