From One Home to Thousands: How Centra Install Pros Is Giving BackCentra Install Pros is proud to launch something brand new – a podcast designed to bring real, unfiltered conversations about the home renovation industry. The Install Pros Podcast is where the people shaping the future of renovation and business come together to share what actually works.
Hosted by Senior Vice President of Centra Install Pros Emily Parson, the podcast opens with a guest who helped lay the foundation for everything Centra is today: founder John Tilstra. It’s a look back at where Centra started, how it grew, and the principles that continue to drive it forward, as well as how to build a business that endures and flourishes.
John Tilstra’s story doesn’t begin with a grand business plan. It begins with necessity. Starting in the mid-1980s during a time of high interest rates and limited construction work, John built what would eventually become Centra from the ground up. What began as a siding business evolved into windows and doors, driven by a simple realization: there was a better way to do things.
That mindset – constantly improving, constantly building – became a defining trait of the company.
One of the most impactful moments in Centra’s history came with the introduction of Employee Ownership.
Long before it became a widely discussed business model, John made the decision to share ownership with the people building the company day to day. It wasn’t the easiest path, but it was certainly one that proved worthwhile.
The result is what Centra remains today: a 100% Employee Owned company where every team member has a direct stake in the outcome. That sense of ownership doesn’t just shape the culture – it drives performance, accountability, and long-term thinking, and it’s allowed Centra to grow beyond what John ever imagined to become Western Canada’s premier window and door specialist.
Throughout the episode, John shares a leadership philosophy grounded in practicality and experience.
For him, it always came back to loyalty. Loyalty to the team, to the work, and to the long-term vision. It’s a theme that shows up again and again, whether he’s talking about hiring, building teams, or navigating growth.
There’s also a level of honesty – mistakes are part of the process, but one lesson is clear: when something isn’t working, waiting too long to act only makes it harder.
Strong leadership isn’t about perfection. It’s about making decisions, learning quickly, and staying focused on what matters.
As Centra grew, the challenges changed. Moving from a small operation into a multi-million-dollar company required more than just hard work. It required systems, structure, and the right people in the right roles. Departments, reporting, and clear processes became essential to sustaining growth.
At the end of the day, real growth comes from building a business that can handle more, not just take on more.
One of the most practical insights from the episode is simple but often overlooked: focus on what you do best.
Over the years, John explored different opportunities and industries, but the biggest lesson was clear. Businesses succeed when they stay aligned with their strengths and continue refining what they already do well. For Centra, that meant committing fully to windows and doors… and doing it better than anyone else.
The conversation also touches on something increasingly important: the future of trades.
In a world where technology continues to reshape industries, skilled trades remain essential. They can’t be outsourced, automated, or replaced. And for those willing to invest in learning and developing their skills, they offer long-term stability and opportunity.
It’s a message that resonates strongly today, especially for younger generations exploring career paths.
Although John stepped away from Centra several years ago, the impact of his leadership is still felt across the company.
Today, he leads Wesmont, continuing to build in the Lower Mainland while staying closely connected to the industry - among other ventures. Meanwhile, Centra continues to grow, guided by the same principles it was built on: ownership, accountability, and a commitment to doing things the right way.
That continuity is no accident – it’s the result of building a business that’s designed to last.
The Install Pros Podcast isn’t just about telling stories. These are real, no-fluff conversations with the people building, leading, and growing in the trades. We’re sharing the kind of insights that help homeowners make better decisions and help businesses operate at a higher level.
This first episode sets the tone for what’s to come: honest talk, practical lessons, and a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to build something that lasts. And if this episode is any indication, it’s going to be worth the listen.
The first episode of the Install Pros Podcast featuring John Tilstra is now live.
Whether you’re a homeowner planning your next project, someone working in the trades, or a business owner looking for practical insight, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.
Stay tuned for future episodes as we continue to sit down with the people shaping the future of home renovation.
