Combustibility & the Building CodeIn the world of construction and renovation, there's a growing recognition of the importance of accessibility. From ramps to wider doorways, the focus is shifting towards creating spaces that accommodate everyone. For our final installment of our Master Class, the Window Geeks are looking at how accessibility requirements in the BC Building Code affect windows and doors. Read on to find out how these regulations may impact your own project.
In British Columbia, Section 3.8 of the BC Building Code outlines the specific requirements to ensure accessibility throughout the province. When it comes to windows, careful attention is paid to their positioning and operation. Operating controls must be situated between 400 – 1200mm from the floor, adjacent to, and centred on a clear floor space of 1,350 mm by 800 mm. Moreover, the hardware must be operable with one hand in a fist position and with a maximum force of 22N (BCBC 3.8.3.8 "Controls & outlets").
Doors, on the other hand, present an additional challenge as they involve the user physically passing through them. BCBC 3.8.3.6 "Doorways and Doors" mandates a minimum clear door width of 850mm, while BCBC 3.8.3.2 "Accessible Path of Travel" limits abrupt changes in level to 13mm. These specifications aim to ensure that individuals with mobility impairments can navigate doorways safely and comfortably.
While the BCBC serves as a comprehensive regulatory framework, there are additional resources available to further enhance accessibility standards:
Inclusivity should be the norm rather than the exception, so it's essential for those involved in the construction industry to prioritize accessibility in every aspect of their projects. By adhering to the standards set forth in the BC Building Code and leveraging additional resources and guidelines, builders, designers, and owners can create environments that welcome and accommodate people of all abilities.
