Casement or Awning Windows: Which are better?

Design Energy Savings

If you’re in the market for new windows, you may be wondering whether casement or awning style is the right way to go. What are the main differences? How do they compare in terms of function? And is one more efficient than the other? These two popular options each offer their own benefits, and the Window Geeks have compiled this handy guide to help you make the right decision for your home!

Casement Windows

Casement windows are hinged at the side and open outward. They’re also often operated with a crank mechanism. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of casement windows:

Ventilation

Casement windows can typically open very wide, providing excellent ventilation. When fully open, they allow maximum airflow into the room – making them ideal for rooms such as kitchens, where good ventilation comes in very handy during cooking. We all know what it’s like to overcook something and set off that fire alarm. A wide-opening window is a godsend!

Energy Efficiency

Casements tend to be among the more efficient window types. When closed, they seal tightly against the frame, minimizing air leakage. This tight seal helps to prevent drafts and keeps your home comfortable year-round, with the added bonus of reducing heating and cooling costs!

Unobstructed Views

Casement windows typically feature more glass and less framing than some other types of windows. This offers homeowners better views of the outdoors with less obstruction, and also has the added benefit of letting more light into a room, something we can appreciate all year round.

Security

The locks on casement windows are embedded within the frame, making them more difficult to tamper with from the outside. We all want to feel safe in our homes, and this added security feature provides homeowners with extra peace of mind – especially for ground-level windows.

Versatility

Casement windows and their frames are easy to customize, coming in various sizes and configurations to suit differing home styles and design preferences. Like a modern look? We’ve got you! Prefer something more traditional? We have that covered too! Casements can also be paired with other window types such as picture windows to create custom configurations and provide even more options to the homeowner.

Awning Windows

Awning windows are hinged at the top and open upwards. Think of the awning of a tent! Let’s dive into some advantages of awning windows:

Weather Protection

One of the big benefits to awning windows over casements – which our BC customers will know well – is that they’re useful during rainy weather. Awning windows can be partially opened without letting that rain in, while still allowing for air circulation.

Privacy

Awning windows can be combined with picture windows featuring obscure glass, sitting above them to allow for privacy while also allowing airflow. This makes them a great option for bathrooms or ground-level spaces where homeowners desire privacy.

Energy Efficiency

Much like casement windows, awning windows form a tight seal when closed, reducing air infiltration and boosting energy efficiency. This helps maintain consistent indoor temperatures throughout winter and summer, and can help contribute to savings on your energy bills.

Ventilation Control

Awning windows offer versatility in terms of ventilation control. If it’s a super hot day, open it all the way. If it’s a little chilly out, but you still want airflow to freshen up a room? Just crack it a little. Awning windows are great for allowing homeowners to adjust the angle of their windows to regulate airflow.

Space-Saving

Since awning windows open outward, they don’t encroach on interior living spaces when you open them. This makes them suitable for areas that are constricted by limited wall space, or spots where furniture placement could obstruct the window’s operation.

Which Window Type is Right for You?

Ultimately, the decision between casement and awning windows comes down to your specific needs, preferences, and style – and quite often, you don’t have to constrict yourself to one type. Casements could work perfectly well for your living room, while an awning window could make a lot more sense for your bathroom. Consider each room, and take into account factors such as ventilation requirements, energy efficiency, local weather conditions, privacy concerns, and aesthetic preferences when making your choice. Be sure to consult with a reputable window manufacturer that can provide valuable insights and guidance tailored to your needs.
