How to Inspect Weatherstripping and Caulking

Geek Level 1

Inspecting your windows on occasion helps you spot any issues before they become bigger problems.

Two important parts of your windows that should be inspected are the caulking and the weatherstripping. Here we’ll show you how to do it and what to watch for.

Caulking can usually be seen on the surface around the window. If it is not visible, it will be on the inside along the building envelope. If it is visible, inspect it for any missing sections or peeling.

First, remove the sashes from the window or fully open them if they’re a crank system window. Now you can inspect the weatherstripping around all surfaces for rips, tears, and missing sections.

If you have Centra Windows and notice damaged pieces, call our service department and we’ll come out and take a look for you.

Top Tip: Perform a complete inspection as soon as your install is complete so easy fixes can be taken care of right away by your installation team.

Damaged weatherstripping or caulking can cause headaches down the road, so check them fairly regularly.
