A Calgary Story: The Davis Family

Some renovations improve a home. This one changed how a child could survive in his. When the Davis family of Calgary came to us, they weren't looking for windows that simply looked nicer or cut their energy bill. They needed windows that could protect their son Jake's life.

Jake lives with an ERCC1 Deficiency, an extraordinarily rare DNA repair disorder – he was the first confirmed case in Canada, and only the third documented in all of North America. For Jake, ordinary sunlight is dangerous: it damages his cells roughly 20 times faster than normal, and his body can't repair the damage the way most people's can.

That's where new windows came in. Our team installed high-performance glazing capable of blocking out 99% of UV A and B radiation. For Jake, that meant something most of us never think about: the ability to live in his home without putting his life at risk.

It remains one of the most personally meaningful projects in the history of Centra Cares, and a reminder of why we keep this contest going year after year.
